The Hidden Costs of “Lived-In” Hair Colors: Unveiling the Truth Behind Low-Maintenace Hair Trends

In the ever-evolving world of hair trends, Lived-In hair colors, Low-Maintenance hues, and Balayage have become increasingly popular among individuals seeking a stylish yet effortless look. These techniques offer a natural, sun-kissed appearance and the allure of minimal upkeep. However, the reality is that achieving and maintaining these coveted styles may not be as cost-effective as one initially assumes.

At Color House Denver, formerly known as Do the Bang Thing Salon, we have over 12 years of experience in the industry and have garnered numerous awards and accolades for our exceptional service. With a dedicated team and a pet-friendly, gender-neutral environment that includes holistic services, we pride ourselves on providing our clients with honest and insightful information about hair trends and maintenance.

While the allure of Low-Maintenance hair colors is undeniable, it's essential to shed light on the hidden costs that are often overlooked. Here are the key factors to consider:

“Lived-In” Has a Higher Initial Cost:

The initial cost of achieving something like a Balayage or Dimensional Color can be significantly more expensive, as these techniques usually require extra time and product, thereby increasing both the cost and time commitment for the guest.

Maintenance Is Vital:

The problem lies in the maintenance that individuals often neglect to consider. Even after the initial appointment, regular touch-ups and toning treatments are necessary to preserve the desired look. Some guests complain about their hair looking drab or brassy. This is often due to the fact that products like Toner and Glazes are only meant to last 6 to 8 weeks, emphasizing the importance of regular upkeep.

Regular Haircuts and Products:

Following each full appointment, clients still require regular haircuts ( we recommend 8 to 10 weeks) and quality hair products to maintain the health and vibrancy of their color-treated hair.

Life Events and Lifestyle Changes:

It's crucial to factor in life events and changes that may impact the frequency of salon visits. For instance, when planning around events such as weddings, graduations, or trips, it is important to consider the timing of hair appointments. For brides-to-be, scheduling a visit a few weeks before the big day ensures that their hair looks pristine but has time for corrections if needed. On the other hand, guests returning from a beach vacation may beed to come in after their trip, as to prolonged sun exposure, chlorine or saltwater can cause their hair color to fade even further. Taking these factors into account can help individuals maintain their desired look throughout various life events and activities.

The True Cost Revealed:

When the maintenance of Lived-In hair colors, Balayage, or Dimensional Color is extended 6 to 8 months out, it almost certainly adds time and necessitates more products to restore the desired aesthetic. As one of our clients aptly expressed, “Sometime waiting that long is not better.” In-between “Express Services” such as Accent Foil/Balayage*, Toner*, or Hairline Color*can help curb the cost of lengthy visits and drive down cost when it is time to refresh the entire look.

It's imperative for individuals considering these low-maintenance hair trends to weigh the long-term financial commitment and maintenance requirements associated with them. At Color House Denver, we believe in transparency and empowering our clients to make informed decisions about their hair care.

In conclusion, while lived-in hair colors and low-maintenance styles offer a beautiful and effortless aesthetic, it's essential to understand the full scope of the investment required to maintain these looks. By considering the often overlooked factors such as ongoing maintenance, haircut needs, product expenses, and the impact of lifestyle changes, individuals can make informed choices that align with their preferences and budget.

At Color House Denver, we are committed to providing exceptional service and guiding our clients through their hair care journey with honesty and expertise. We believe that every individual deserves to feel confident and informed about their hair choices, and we are here to support them every step of the way.

Accent Foil/Balayage: A service placing 10 to 15 foils or pieces of lightening around face and top of head to help bring lengthier services up closer to scalp.

Toner: A Demi Permanent shiny product placed on pre lightened pieces to help cut brassiness, dullness, or faded hair. Even used seasonally to transform a look from winter to summer hues.

Hairline Color: ONLY DONE FOR CURRENT GUESTS. A express 15 minutes root retouch around hairline, part, and sides (think of a t-bone section) to help guests avoid coming in 2,3, or 4 weeks for an entire root retouch. Costing $20 to $35 a guest can come in, have it placed, and then can go home to wash out themsleves. Saving hundreds of dollars over the year and not dealing with purchasing “at home” products that may interfere with professional products and saving guests the headache of applying their own color.
